so what?
Unlike previous games incorporating SecuROM, however, uninstalling Far Cry 2 will automatically revoke an activation, meaning that as long as owners properly uninstall the game when they're finished with it, they'll be able to install it an unlimited number of times on three systems.
The message also says the revoke system will allow gamers to upgrade their systems as many times as they want, presumably by uninstalling the game before performing an upgrade, and also promises that "additional activations can be provided" if necessary. "Ubisoft is committed to the long term support of our games," the forum manager wrote. "You'll always be able to play Far Cry 2."

Because when I go to format my computer, or when I have a catastrophic hardware failure, the very first thing I think of is to make sure my games are properly uninstalled, right?

I read about this this morning, and it pisses me off a bit. I normally like to think of Ubi as the good guys since they're kind enough to actually port their console games to PC, plus their games are actually pretty good (I actually liked Assassin's Creed, for one).
At this point, I'm leaning towards "not buy" instead of "pirate to spite them." Compared to the Spore DRM, they do offer quite a few more amenities, though that's not saying much seeing how draconian the Spore DRM was.

I have a feeling people will buy it anyway, just like Bioshock.
The Far Cry 2 trailer (http://www.gamer.no/videoer/6951) with factions & animals has a very promising ring to it. It almosts sounds and looks like we will get a 'GTA: Blood Diamonds' done by a pyromaniac.

lol I've always had bad experiences with Ubisoft games. Case in point, I received a free copy of XIII with a video card but because I had a lite-on drive it would install but fail to pass the security check. I looked on their forums and found the reason was the DRM company decided lite-on drives were used by hackers and prevented the game from starting if you had one... I shit you not.
About 3 posts down the page was a listing of where to get the nocd cracks that bypassed then DRM... on Ubisofts own site. What made it worse is the moderator posting later down in the same thread but not removing the links.
So here was ubisoft turning a blind eye to using cracks to get this game to work as their own DRM implementation screwed up anyone with a lite on drive.
Shame the cracks never worked and I couldn't ever get my legitimate copy to work.

XIII was all kinds of buggy in that regard, I bought the fucking game but couldnt get it to install right but a year later I bought a video card that came with a copy and that one installed fine....

I'm excited about FC2 regardless of DRM issues.

Will that remove the SecuROM in favor of Steam's DRM? I remember looking around the steampowered forums when Crysis Warhead was announced to be on steam but I couldn't find a reliable answer at the time.

It didn't for Bioshock, Steam version got the same SecureROM implementation as the CD.
