I was skeptical about this game at first. But after viewing the screenies and trailer, it looks like it will be worth at least a rental.

Just watched a bunch of vids on the multiplayer, and it looks interesting to me. I'm looking forward to unlocking fun WWII-era weapons, and also to the possibility that since it's all WWII weapons it'll help cut down on the M4 mag-dump style of gameplay that's way too prevalent in CoD4.

Also, as someone who played the hell out of the original CoD multiplayer, it'll be a nice trip down memory lane to snipe people with BARs and outdo people using the scoped sniper rifles with ironsights.

I will probably buy it, but if they go ww2 again for their next game...I definitely won't be buying. And yeah I know what you're talking about in CoD1. Sniping is quite difficult, as it should be.

Do you mean from the sniper's point of view? I had a harder time sniping in CoD4 than CoD1, with all the breath-holding and massive scope sway shenanigans. CoD1 was damned generous with its almost non-existent sway that you can easily adjust for.

If you mean because most people had a weapon capable of hitting you too, I'd say that's the same case as CoD4; real easy to outshoot people using the sniper rifles with a red-dot M16, G3, or M14.

Hmm, yeah I guess that's true. I haven't played a ton of CoD4 lately. I do remember that after holding your breath with the sniper rifles for as long as you can...looks like you're having a damn stroke.

I havent played and enjoyed cod multiplayer since cod1. i HATE the health system they've implemented since cod2. I just cant play a multiplayer game that has a regenerating health system.

Yeah, regenerating health kinda blows. It's like, "Hey, I've been making hit and run attacks on this guy for the past few minutes now, but if he hides behind a trash can for 10 seconds, it's like nothing happened."

that was by far the most satisfying part of original cod multiplayer, using the kar98k and the m1 to outsnipe people with scoped rifles

but then you had the fucking russians and their gay ppsh smg that would bum rush you endlessly

Yeah, PPSH was majorly unbalanced. The only thing I liked about it was then running around in the back with a Mosin and blasting unsuspecting players on the German side who were toting MP40s and MP44s or had picked up a PPSH themselves to try and thwart the PPSH rushers.

Well what made sniping in CoD 1 + 2 difficult was the maps. There were few maps with areas where sniper rifles were superior.

so I read somewhere (I'll get the link when I get home from work) that when you complete the single player campaign, another game mode is introduced: long story short you fight off an endless amount of zombie nazis

It's mehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh .

WW2 copy-pasted into CoD4's engine. It's more of the same. :|

Brecourt and Hurtgen were the main sniping maps from what I remember. I liked Carentan though, I got to do double-duty as an assaulter and occasional sniper/counter-sniper when I was using the BAR. It was like having a non-sucky Garand for sniping purposes, being able to reload whenever, 20 rounds in the mag, and a tiny front post ironsight that made sniping at long range easy.

There was one level with two destroyed buildings facing each other. I was good at sniping on that one. But there were only like two maps that I could really take advantage of the range. CoD 4 is pretty much the same in that respect. Overgrown is the only map I can do well on using the sniper rifles.

Ohhhh, right, Pavlov. I forgot that one because I used to snipe on it all the time, then I learned this ridiculous flanking route that connected the two houses and kept me out of snipers' line of sight. It involved one of the side buildings and trenches, and led from one house to another, I think either ground floor or basement. After that, it was a simple matter of taking the MP40 or PPSH you brought along the way and clearing the house of snipers. Sure beat the usual snipe-wait-snipe stalemate.

I suck at sniping on Overgrown. Too many angles of approach on all sides, too much badly-rendered vegetation killing my laptop's framerate. I snipe a lot on Backlot, Tanker, Crash, the Middle Eastern city streets level I forget the name of. Creek, Chinatown, and Broadcast are the new maps I interchange dedicated sniper rifle usage with red-dot ARs or MGs depending on what's going on. Creek is especially conducive to red-dot M60 whorage thanks to the ledges everywhere and the grass helping with concealment.

I saw a video that had barricades you could build/repair to help hold off the zombies.

Sniping in CoD4 is such a joke.

The maps are way too small for it to be useful. I used to play it on a LAN with a buddy, and I would watch him lining up shots, holding his breath, etc, etc.

Meanwhile I would just snap up the M16 irons and put a burst into the guy in about 1/3 the time.

COD:WaW has a zombie mode.

Its a dissapointment. COD4 multiplayer + another boring assortment of WW2 weapons = COD5. Even has the same game modes, types of weapon mods(rank unlocks) and perks. Looks are pretty much on par with COD4, but I dont like the player anims, they look jerky. Meh. Dissapointed.

Well, I DL'ed the beta, and registered for a key, but haven't heard a reply yet. This was about 4 hours ago.

Anyone else have a problem like this??

Just finished the registration process, and they gave me the key after I verified e-mail. It should be in your profile controls somewhere.

Beta's alright so far. Gotta play in 720x480 with all graphics turned down, but it's playable. Digging the irons on the Springfield right now, getting some nice kills at distance, bringing back the COD1 memories.

:o Is the game that much more demanding than CoD4?

-e- you play on an Inspiron 9300 right?

I think they improved the graphics just enough that 1024x768 on all low is a bit much for my laptop. Lots of foliage in a lot of the maps doesn't help either.

I've got a E1505, a little older than 2 years now. Main crutch is the X1400 I have.

Well, I never got the verification Email... but oddly, I could still get the key by checking my profile stuff.

Anyway:
The good:
Finally we have the Japanese in a WW2 game. I dunno why they neglected doing this so long, I mean, it's not like they folded over as quick as france... or italy, even*.

Has CoD4's class configuration stuff. No more being put on Axis on a russian map and being ppsh whored. Hopefully, they redid the ppsh so it's no worse than CoD4's p90 (I can actually kill p90 users with an mp5, not so using an mp40 vs PPSH) including perks, etc...

The maps, at least the 3 in the beta, look good.

I think that CoD-waw also has a gritter atmosphere to it.

More weapons than in previous CoD ww2 era games.

Nice little visual touches. Like when using the iron sites, the site closest to the eye gets blurry, like when one focuses on an object away from the eye when there is another near the eye.

The bad:
It feels more like a (pro quality) mod for CoD4 than a true stand alone game.

I'd like to see a health system more like CoD1 (set amount of health, kill a guy and he drops a smallish health pack). I can live with regen'ing health, but a silver lining to this cloud is that knowing an enemies health can come back stresses the importance of aiming well, and catching the enemy off guard.

The Gobbeh verdict:
CoD-WaW, is a fun beta (and, assumibly a good final, if it is any indication) and a good game. Not "Wait at the game store overnight 'till it opens then buy the limited edition" good, but good. A little more to make it not seem like simply a reskinned CoD4, and a health system that didn't imply that soldiers are part troll, would make it superb.

Score for CoD-WaW beta: 8/10 : Buy it, but wait 'till the release day hype dies down, or it's on sale at $10 off.

*In all my history classes, and even in documentaries I've seen on history channel, the fact that Italy was in the war seemed to be more of an afterthought (Oh, and we attacked and defeated italy, too), than something worth mentioning as part of the "main body" of the lesson/program. Seeing as Japan's involvement was a bit more noteworthy, I'm surprised it hasn't been included in a ww2 game (at least that I've seen) until now. I mean, Japan dragged the U.S. into the conflict, and while Europe might've been liberated without the U.S. getting involved, its involvement hardly hindered things...

Japan was definitely more hardcore than Italy. Both Japan and Italy mobilized their populations for war, but Japan just took it to a whole other level considering they were more or less dominating the initial stages of WWII. In any case, it's cool having the Japanese as a playable side; the Japanese-language audio taunts I've overheard so far sound (given my extremely limited knowledge of Japanese) convincing and add a nice touch.

What I'm really liking so far is that rifle grenades are not immediately accessible, and in fact are at the farther end of the unlock tree rather than something anyone can get via default class selection. Overall, good mix of weapons available from the very beginning or quickly thereafter, and I'm not seeing any super-unbalanced weapons ruin the balance so far.

Random request: can someone with better graphics than let me know whether the Germans are wearing a camo pattern, or if their feldgrau uniforms are just super-dirty. It almost looks like they're wearing one of the SS patterns, but the textures are so grainy for me it looks like it could be dried mud too.

Fucking hell, I'm starting to actually hate Treyarch now.

I downloaded the beta and installed, and it worked fine for the first few games. Then I try to play again just now, and the fucking thing takes five times as long to load a map, plus it crashes my graphics driver and forces me to reboot.
