So I've been watching a lot of Battlestar Galactica lately, and I'm in the hankering for a good space-set piloting/dogfighting game, but can't think of any modern ones. Do you guys have any suggestions for me?
In before any of the x-wing games.

This has a two-mission demo out. The instant action missions are fun.

One step further than I got, I can't even install the thing, it just locks up every time.

Especially since it's open source, so you can get the whole game (on an updated engine, no less) for free.

Freelancer is pretty good, although missions outside the story are pretty shallow.

That's actually what i was thinking of.
You can't pilot w/ a stick.
But yeah the game is pretty tits. :D Online is awesome too. :D
The side missions were almost always the same. :\
And how the hell could you destroy the big battle star ship things? It says 0 under your stats like you could, but I never saw health when I shot at them... only lasers then death.

So, maybe I'm just stupid, but do I need an actual copy of Freespace2 before I can get Freespace2 Open to work?
Because I tried downloading and installing the latter, it doesn't want to work, and I can't find anyone with a solution to the problem I'm having, which leads me to believe that I need a copy of the original game.

Wow, lots of Freelancer love, I thought it wasn't hardcore enough for most people here to like it. But yes Freelancer, times a million.

I don't know, but if you end needing to buy a copy, check out gog.com (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/freespace_2). No DRM, unlimited downloads, prepatched game for $5.99.

Starshatter. Fly anything from a fighter to a bomber, to frigates and carriers, order missions, and do planetary raids as well.

Yeah, the only really good space combat games I've played are the X-Wing/Tie Fighter games and the Wing Commander games (up through WC4... the stuff after that, not so much).
I don't understand why the hell LucasArts doesn't just make a new X-Wing game. It seems like a total no-brainer.

Because LucasArts can only make one good game every few years.

Still waiting for a remake of X-Wing vs Tie Fighter on a modern engine. Dunno why they haven't thought of that yet.

It wasn't released on the PC, so from my perspective it hardly even exists much less was good.
