If you like Chess you might want to give this a spin. (http://www.ulyssesinteractive.com/content/games/java/fidchell.html) Though not as diverse or complex as Chess, the game's simple nature makes it somewhat harder. The game in the link calls itself Fidchell, but it's actually more like the Scottish variant of Tafl known as Ard Ri, mixed with a piece placement similar to the Tablut variation. Actual Fidchell is described in Irish legend as being played with an even number of pieces.

Fun. Too bad the computer moves so fast it can be hard to discern why you movement allowed for a capture.

Captures are made by pinning an enemy soldier between two of your soldiers, same for the computer.

Oh, merely two? I thought it was surrounding it on three sides.

Game is a bit too easy. I couldn't figure out how to play as the attacker though, so maybe that would add some challenge. As it was, I didn't lose once in six games.

Rules are as so: King piece and move up, down, left or right one move at a time. Soldier pieces can move up, down, left or right any number of spaces as long as the space isn't blocked. soldiers cannot land on the middle or the four corners, only the king can.
Captures are made by pinning a soldier between two other soldiers. King is captured by surrounding him, resulting in black win. If the King makes it to one of the four corners white wins.
@callouspenguin: Once you figure out the computers basic style its pretty easy. An actual game (if you can find anyone to play) is much harder. There also isn't anyway to play as the attacks as far as I know.

Sorry, I meant to imply that the computer opponent was too easy, not that the game itself is somehow king centric. The computer will repeatedly suicide into an obvious trap, letting you either kill all his pieces for the win, or make an open route for the king to get to a corner.
Oh, and the king can move any number of spaces as well....at least in this flash version. I have played something similar with people in which the king could only move one space at a time.
