Ok, I guess it's time for a computer upgrade, I'm suffering from computer lag, not only on multiplayer, but on single player. The game just freezes up and skips constantly, it's a pain in the ass. Everything is already on the lowest video setting and audio setting as well

Some times when I want to stop and aim for someone, ill just keep on walking in the same direction while I’m not even touching the keyboard, just hard core computer lag....

Some times it runs smooth, the map "Wake Island 2007" runs pretty smooth, but every urban.. More busy map.... it lags like hell, I mean really choppy.... its def. not connection.. my ping is usually under 100, sometimes under 30 and still skipping.... and it also skips in single player so I guess it's time to upgrade...

Here are my specs...

Video Card: ATI Radeon 9600 (Video Card Memory of 128DDR)
RAM: 512 MB
Operating System: Windows XP
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+ 2.09 GHz

(not really sure what else you need to know, please ask if i forgot something)

Once again, all settings are on low.... What needs upgrading and what do you suggest?

BF2 is just a loosely coded resource hog. You should upgrade your RAM. I've heard that this is one of the few games where going from 1GB to 2GB provides a noticeable performance boost, so I wouldn't be surprised if 512MB was unplayable.

I have the same skipping problem in single player and online. I partially solved it by lowering Texture quality, but since you say you're at low everything this probably won't help you.

upgrade order:
Ram first 'cause it's cheap- add a gig.
videocard next. 6600gt is pretty cheap.
processor last.

What resolution are you using?

might be time for a system overhaul if you're unhappy with your performance.

you might run into certain problems with your current set-up. If you get yourself a new gfx card, it'll have to be AGP, but unfortunately, that's being phased out. Secondly, if you get a new processor, you will need a new mobo, there are no more socket A processors being made anymore.

what exactly is a mobo?

Welcome to BF2. My athlon64 3800+/geforce 6600GT/1 gig DDR400 dual channel machine exhibits these faults all the time. And on xp 64-bit, it has a nice bug where it just freezes solid for about 15 seconds, so count yourself lucky you're not using this OS

Every other game I've tried has run wonderfully on this pc, and that includes HL2, CS: S, GTA San andreas, and a few very graphically intensive racing games. All run on highest detail, smooth as butter.

I think the best thing you can do for BF2 is to upgrade your RAM to 2gb, and get a smokin' SATA drive. Generally the performance issues aren't rendering issues (certainly not on my pc), but horrendously ineffecient page file and memory usage on BF2's part.

Your computer just can't keep up with BF2, as others have already stated.

1) Upgrade your RAM to 1GB, 2x512 dual channel preferred. You'll see a benefit at 2GB but if you're still running a 2600XP you won't see any tangible results of that investment.
2) New graphics card
3) New CPU/Mobo

In that order.

Ok, this is what I'm buying tomorrow..

1 GiG of DDR Ram, so i should have 1.5 GB of Ram
and a
Radeon X700 pro Graphics card... (I have a Radeon 6800 SE right now)

i'd suggest getting a Geforce 6600GT instead. it's actually a better performer in most situations, unless you'd prefer to go with ATI.

Good advice from everyone, my order is
RAM
Video Card
SATA Hard drive (if your mobo supports it)
Processor/mobo

yes, but always think with the future in mind. If you get PC133 ram, it won't run well (if at all) with a newer mobo.

getting a new video card is great, but think about your next move. it would be a shame to spend a lot of money on an AGP gfx card that won't be able to go through your next mobo purchase.

Not much he can do about graphics incompatibilities if he wants to run BF2 today but doesn't have enough for a new mobo/proc.

Actually. He could buy one of those ULi chipset boards that have both PCI-E and AGP ports.

I have to second the choice of the 6600GT over the x700Pro as well. If you want to go ATI, look into the cheaper x800 alternatives. X700 isn't worth it. On the Nvidia front, the 6600GTs are solid midrange cards, 6800 vanillas are really down in price and they can be opened up to 16 pipes/6 shaders with a vga bios flash. Those are the best choices for a bang/buck graphics solution.

I have said it once, and I will say it ten thousand times, BIOS flashes on nVidia cards are for suckers, Rivatuner for the fucking win.

I thought that's exactly what Rivatuner did... whoops. Perhaps I should know this because I have it on my main rig?

Yeah. Rivatuner unlocks the pipes on 6800 vanillas.

True, it all depends what his current mobo supports.

WOW... god now it runs sooo well.... I've been playing all night... damn. High setting is rediculously detailed, im sticking to medium.. good enough for me and runs really smooth... I bought the X700 Pro cause it was on sale at best buy for 89.99, had to buy it..... It works really really well..... I'm loving it

Hahahahahahahahahahaha

It's odd, I can run BF2 for a long time with no problem - then all of sudden I'll get really bad "skipping". This is where the refresh rate drops down to SPF and the sound skips in and out.

This will last for about a minute then go back to normal. This doesn't happen on a regular schedule or even on the same map, it just appears random.

I've been wondering whether investing in a cheapo Audigy(2?) card would help, rather than using my onboard sound.

PS Daquang Oilfields ALWAYS causes my PC to lag/skip like a mofo

Not sure mirsk. I have an Audigy 2 value card that has a neat little glitch. I can run BF2 with audio on Hardware medium and eax on and it sounds great. If i want to use Ventrilo though....I'm shit outta luck. Vent and BF2 wil fight over the card and crash the pc. The solution for the crash? Put BF2 into software audio mode. Kinda defeats the purpose of the extra hardware.

I have an x800pro
two 512 sticks of ddr 223
and a p4 2.4ghz

I was thinking of upgrading the ram mobo and processor to play better in bf2, what would any suddgestions be?
