Well, got my PC back from my buddy today. As I figured, mobo is blown to hell. Was gonna browse around tonight and see if I can just get away replacing that and praying. Well, after being out and playing with a wicked Dodge Charger Super Bee all evening, I get back to the house with a cup of coffee and an episode of Scrubs. The girl asks if she can use my laptop to pay her credit card bill online since she got paid today. Not a big deal, right? Wrong.
So she's sitting there and browsing a few sites and says, "Hey, some window just popped up about some shit about a virus."
I'm thinking thinking it's some page that detected a trojan or something so I ask what the screen says. She replies, "It says it found something and deleted it." Right, so it was just some goofy page that had something. I say, "Alright, hit 'Close Window' and it'll be fine." I'm thinking I'll run a full scan before bed just to be sure. But then...
"Why is it scanning for shit now?"
Hmm? That's not right. So I get up to go peep it out. There's a window up running MSAntiSpyware2009. Fffffffffffuuuuuuu-
BSOD!
Oh lawd. Restart. Shit installed on start up now. Uh oh. Well, maybe I can clo-
BSOD!
Oh, this can't be good. Ok then. Restart. Open regedit.
Sorry, dawg. I can't let you do that. You gots to have admin and shiz.
But... but I am the admin. Oh crap. Well, maybe if I can Goog-
BSOD!
Ok, then. Restart. Start HijackThis!
Sorry, dawg. That .exe is a virus. BALEETED!
Ffffffffffff-
Ok, restart in Safe Mode. Reinstall HijackThis!, remove some stuff. Try to open intarwebz for pr0n to calm me down because the half pack of smokes isn't helping right now. Hrmmm. Wireless is disconnected? Why? Whatevah, reconnect.
Acquiring IP address. Disconnected.
Wat. Reconnect.
Acquiring IP address. Disconnected.
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-
Cmd. ipconfig /release
Yo, dawg. You can't do that mess when the media is disconnected.
WAT! RAAAAAAAHHHHHH! Open network utility.
Huh? Of course your card is working. It's right here. See? WTF? That bitch ass Command Prompt says it ain't here? Man, he a busta. I'm showing you dis card right here. You think I'm a liar? That shit is workin' like a charm. All you gots to do is connect.
Cmd. ipconfig /release
Bitch, I told you! You can't release nuttin'!
FINE! Connect to WLAN.
Connected! Signal strength at 718927%! HOLY CHRIST ON A CRUTCH! ACQUIRING AN IP, HOMIE! Disconnected.

Like, at first I was really pissed off and jumped around scream "GENTLEMEN!" in anger but then, it hit me. I realized, life could be so much worse. I could be a Canadian. And so I skipped off with a smile and whistled a tune because it's good to know you're not the complete scum of the earth.

Awwwww, dude. My laptop is soooo fucked.
It's a polymorphic virus. It infects things like ATF cleaner and HijackThis! and the AV instantly sees them and deletes them. It's somehow dicking my connection to the webs so I can't update DATs. I can run my AV and it'll find 6-9 instances and delete them and as soon as it finishes, I can run it again and find them right back.
Frustration is a mild word at this point. And it's too goddamn cold to smoke more than half a cigarette without my toes falling off. I'm pretty pissed right now. Been working on this bitch for almost 7 hours now with zero headway. About to call it a night though. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Well, I THINK I've managed to clean out the virus. Just came up with a clean scan. Fucking finally. Problem is now with the wireless. Like, I can connect to some unsecured WLAN from a nearby house but the one in this house won't work. Like, I can see it on the list of networks but as soon as I try to connect, it establishes connection, begins acquiring an IP and then either locks up or resets and drops the connection. Ideas, gentlemen?

Check your hosts file to see if the virus has left any IP redirects.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
Open up the hosts file with notepad, normally there would be nothing below the comment sections as outlined with #s. Remove anything that's there you don't recognize.
Also check the DNS settings for your network connecton. Go into Network Connections and right click on your wireless network connection-> properties. Select the "Intenet Protocol (TCP/IP)" item and click on Properties. Make sure that the options "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" and selected. Click through the OKs and try to restart the connection.

Lol, now Windows won't boot properly. It just locks up. I booted in safe mode now and I have no desktop. No start bar, no icons. Nothing. I can open the Task Manager and start things. Sorta. Man, this is fucked.

Unless he's used Spybot Search & Destroy to immunize his pc against malware sites-spybot writes all of the malware sites to the hosts file with a re-direct to the local machine ip 127.0.0.1
Does your antivirus allow any sort of a boot time scan-to scan the HD before windows loads? Well... first... any luck getting windows back up?

Well, I still don't have Windows working properly. Last Known Good did no good. Still using Task Manager to launch things and just managed to find a redirect. Too bad it did no good because the fecking thing can't connect to the internet. I just got my scanner up and running again and I...
...wait... shit. Yeah, it just BSODed again. Rofl

If you can get anything off of there that you need using dos safe mode do it and apply bleach to your HD. Sounds like the only thing left is a low level format and reinstall of everyting.
Pulsar Solaris
February 7th, 2009, 04:12 AM
Yeah, feeling that too. I'm pretty sure I can get most of my stuff off it. Just gonna take a little work. Might post up a HijackThis! log in a bit. Got a lot of garbage on it that I don't know about but AdAware isn't picking anything up from it. Bunch of stuff that links to .dll files. Will see when I get home.

Man, I have AdAware, Malwarebytes, half a dozen AVs, and some other shit. I can get rid of bits but as soon as I restart, it all comes back.

You could keep on messing around but it sounds like you've been screwed royally. At this point I'd just back up your data and reinstall.
If you can get someone to burn you a CD of Ubuntu you could boot into that and backup your data without having to worry about BSODs.
Tori Storm
February 7th, 2009, 12:30 PM
since youve tried everything, why not try combofix in safe mode too. just two things to remember combofix has to be on desktop and run it in safemode with networking.

There is always a better solution than format. I love those people that have that answer to everything.
"Dude, notepad crashed. Lame."
"Omfg, format the hard drive, bash it to bits with a hammer, melt it with a blow torch, throw the bits into a bucket of concrete and dump it in the ocean!"
And I might get to Combofix later. I think I just made some good headway by removing half the stuff on the hjt log. And Tori obviously didn't read the posts about NOT BEING ABLE TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET or he wouldn't have a huge hard-on for that networking bullshit. Then again, he's Canadian and doing a good a good job being able to read at all.

Formatting is easier and you would have been done 2 days ago.
Let go of the porn man, it's gone.

QFT.
Of course formatting is not the answer to everything but sure, feel free to fuck about and wave your epeen at the naughty trojan writers.
At some point though you've got to weigh up the time investment and consider that you may have screwed things up even more just trying to get rid of the damn thing.

Or I could save all my shit because I'm not lazy and worthless. Like now since I have my desktop back, bitches!! THAT'S RIGHT! I'm winning now without melting my hard drive! Oh yaeh.
Oh crap. Misspelled "yeah." I could backspace and fix it but meh. BRB, FORMAT.

No. The problem was before that I couldn't have recovered any of my stuff on the drive. Once I regained my desktop and such, I backed it all up on my external just to be safe. Then I figured out that the massive host of viruses had dicked my drivers and such so hard that recovering Windows was neigh on impossible. I refused to lose all my stuff without the effort to save it and once that was finished, it wasn't a huge deal to nuke the drive. Now if only I can get my WLAN card drivers working...
