View Full Version : Goonswarm steals Band of Brothers Alliance

Kirex
February 5th, 2009, 01:50 AM
:D Goons accidentally the whole alliance.
According to rens local, (Yes i know, VERY Reliable source!!!!) apparently BoB forgot to pay the alliance bill and the goons quickly recreated the alliance. Talk about getting OWNED.
It'll be interesting to see how CCP handles this. My guess is they're not going to do shit because of the "Band of Developer" drama.

Seems like that kinda ruins some of the fun of the game, if I'm understanding what happened correctly. Then again, I've never played EVE so this might be totally normal.

Yeah, you don't really understand the epicness of it :)

It's pretty amazing, because it's perfectly legitimate ingame, and you really have to understand the history goons and bob have :p

Cant get to the details from work, but it looks like an inside job with spies in director positions, lawl. I would be friggin overjoyed if this spelled the end of large scale alliances. 0.0 should be chock full of hot space death and rapidly expanding dust clouds signifying the former location of fleets.

Goons originally started as an alliance from somethingawful.com. They were, quite literally, a bunch of inexperience newbies to the game. By newbies I mean the average goons was less then two months into the game. They didn't have high skillpoints, money, or experience like the other alliances, but their member count were in the thousands and they used that to their advantage by severely overwhelming their opponent with frigates (the smallest and cheapest ship in the game)

Band of Brothers, on the other hand, were almost the exact opposite. They were THE elite pvpers in eve, disciplined, excellent fleet commanders, very rich, understood game mechanics MUCH better than the average eve player, and they had a HUGE ego. Everybody dreamed about being in BoB.

At first it was kind of "Veteran Players vs New Players", but slowly the numerously superior goons began flying battleships and capital ships and was pretty much at a stalemate, until now.

What kirex (dex) said, both have been powerhouses going at each other for a while without getting anywhere. This will really turn the tide and I'll explain why to those that don't play EVE:

Player made alliances hold sovereignty over whatever space they have control towers in. If their claim on sovereignty isn't contested for a certain amount of time, they get higher levels of control. The higher it is, the more/better stuff they're allowed to put on their control towers.

Jump bridges allow regular ships to travel from one system to another that also has a jump bridge linked to the first one. This allows you to skip making 10-20 jumps (what would take half an hour in a battleship suddenly takes thirty seconds). They're also handy for logistics, bringing in fuel for the towers and everything becomes a lot less hefty.

Capital ships cannot move between systems using the stargates that subcapitals use. They need to lock onto something called a Cynosural field. There are two kinds of mods you can toss onto a tower but only one is really game breaking in this case: The cynosural field jammer.

If a system is "cynojammed", you cannot create a cyno field for capitals to jump to. This means that any offensive mounted on the towers in that system has to be done with sub capitals. Combine that with a jump bridge and you're dealing with a hefty motherfucking fortress (jump bridges allow friendly capital ships to bridge into the system).

Without sovereignty, none of that works. Without an alliance, you have no sovereignty. Not only are all of the super capitals that BoB were building now paused (super caps take weeks to build), but they're wide open for anyone to attack...and I mean wide open...think goatse wide.

This should make for some interesting times, that's for damn sure.

I've never played EVE before, but from the list of systems it looks like KenZoku took most of BOB's territory. What kind of shape are they in?

Now, do you have to build new towers when you take a piece of territory like this, or can you capture them?

Splitlip
February 7th, 2009, 01:19 AM
Unless the owners of the tower join your alliance, you have to blow them up and put up new ones. And Kenzoku is basically BoB, just with some of the fed up corps having left.

Splitlip

the map is going to look really weird as Sovereignty decays and is reclaimed. I cant see if from work, but yeah, those are probably contested spots.

Kirex
February 7th, 2009, 03:13 AM
Wow...from what I read this is how I understand it:
1. BoB held sovereignty over all their station systems
2. KenZoku (A BoB alt/industry alliance) had backup starbases in the same systems
3. KenZoku enabled their starbases to claim sovereignty, but since BoB had more towers, BoB still held sovereignty in the systems.
4. When BoB disbanded, sovereignty automaticly switched to KenZoku after the downtime BoB disbanded.

It takes 7 DAYS for an alliance to claim sovereignty in a System. KenZoku took sovereignty in 1 DAY. What supposedly happened was even though KenZoku didn't hold sovereignty in the system, they still got sovereignty because their starbases had the 'Claim Sovereignty' option enabled for the 7 days that required to claim sovereignty. So their sovereignty claim was running in the background I guess. This caught everybody by surprise, save for Dianabolic (one of the leaders of BoB....remember when I said BoB have a MUCH better understanding of game mechanics?).

So yeah, this is pretty fucking stupid.

For all intents and purposes, KenZoku is the new BoB.
Funfact: Kenzoku means "Family" in Japanese. ;o

Mr. Fiend
February 7th, 2009, 03:33 AM
A slight within a slight... Fascinating. Nevertheless, BoB has lost most of their heavy equipment from what I'm reading.

This game has suddenly peaked my interest.

So they had a backup alliance with towers in place in a sort of Sov holding pattern, so they would kick in and deny any invader for a while?
Well, I think thats borderline exploitative, but, not against the rules I think. Calling it now, every other major alliance tries to set this up, if they havent already.

Tori Storm
February 7th, 2009, 09:47 PM

Over in Goonswarm we somehow got ahold of some BoB secure logs. My favorite one was them crying about how we kicked their asses back and forth all across 0-W. BoB has been in the shitter for awhile, they just had enough capital to keep fighting for quite some time.

Though it is anti-climatic, I'm glad the Goons can now assume their rightful place as the new assholes of the galaxy.

PS Rhosquad all the way :lincoln:

No way brah, the Goons have never been serious in their 'l33t' mentality unlike BoB (I'm not bandwagoning, I've spoken to BoB members before on vent, they really are terrible people... especially lady scarlet LOL FAT JOKES). Besides, not even half of goonswarm plays EVE regularly, and even in rhosquad we just looked at guns and each other's penises all day. I don't know how we ever won a battle.

I'm just going off of my personal experience with various goons in-game.

It's the typical shit that follows when you're not in a group. Joining the goons is like getting the internet shit kicked out of you since they will berate you and kick you from their IRC all the time and the admins love to play good admin/bad admin with the new guys all the fucking time (yes it's childish and stupid, this part of Rho I hated). Then after a week it stops and if you haven't made a shitheel out of yourself, they'll like you and let you fly with them with no complaints. It sounds stupid but its a pretty good way of keeping lazy spies and parasites out not to mention all the other crap you need to do on the forums.

But I know they probably made complete asses of themselves to you, as they don't care about you too much if you're not "one of them." On the other hand I've known BoB guys for months only to have them flip out at me for small things when I was still only a few months into the game not to mention they tried to trick me into giving them my account information. Not all BoB is bad I'm sure, but I've met far more goons who are fun to fuck around with and they don't give a damn if you mess up, so long as you brought your guns.

I also got our FC killed which was fucking hilarious since no one knew that I did it but damn he raged over teamspeak *GRRR FUCK GOONS*. It's okay, he only lost a buzzard.

um.... *from perspective in delve on goon side*

sir molle is full of shit tbh 2 days in a row they managed to alarm clock all the Russians on during American TZ...

that is all that happened... i honestly don't see them turning this around.... now the fight has move and the same shit that was happening before is happening... i just don't see -A- being willing to invest the time an effort in other systems right now... they just wanted 49- so they could project capitals into querious/delve and not have to worry about goon +co doing the same to them in their region (i feel like a dick for forgetting but stain?)
