After some research and bullshit i fixed my computer \o/
the northbridge on my old s939 rig died and seeing as i cant (and dont want to) replace it with another s939 board i replaced it, requiring me to get new cpu and ram. HD's and video card are fine. maybe video card for xmas

so while i really wanted the i7 the entrance fee was a little too luxury for my taste. $1400+ canadian after tax ;o.

So after much deliberation i ended up with :
-AM3 720 x3 ... paid the extra $10 or so for the unlocked multiplier version far cheaper and cooler than the quad core.
-gigabyte board ma790xt-ud4p (the last board was asus and i HATED THE
FREAKING NORTHBRIDGE. it was fail and had in excess of .2v float on the cpu) Its also my second dead asus board in the last year (my old computer formerly the file server died as well the, SATA controller failed)
and then 4 gigs (4 more later when prices drop some more) of ddr3-1600 ocz ram.

so far Im happy with the computer. havent done any benchmarking but Ive got my overclock almost dialed in. the cpu doesnt heat up too badly seeing as there is one disabled core im running temps of 36-38 degrees at full load on air. OC'd up to 3.68Ghz from 2.8Ghz with only a minor voltage increase.
Ive got the ram running reasonably fast at aboot the 800Mhz mark and the timings seem pretty decent for ddr3 at 6-6-7-16 1T

and with another 2 320gig hd's for my 3+1 HD raid 5 it all came to about $700 after tax. not bad if you compare it to the cost of the i7 platform.

just thought id post that so people could see what the am3 could do in a real case (not on an open desk >.>) older scythe ninja (i think) cooler on the cpu

I wish I had someone near me that was good at overclocking :(

honestly keep your processor within a temp and voltage safety envelope and you cant really go wrong. it just takes time. and multiple possible bios resets. WRITE THINGS DOWN

i dont like going into the high 50C range for under full load. I use prime95 as torture test program. Using everest (loltorrent?) as my hardware monitor. i keep my voltage to 10% of stock or so and then check what other people, preferably reputable review sites, have done and use that as a ballpark. If AnandTech claims 3.5 GHz on a decent air cooler i start at 3.3 and work up.
As for ram if u dont want to figure out the timings jsut try to make sure your motherboards auto adjustment keeps the CR (command rate) to 1T and run your ram near the specified MHz limit as in DDR3-1600 is at 800Mhz or there abouts. (1600/2 due to the ram reading on the front and back of clock cycles, so an effective 1600Mhz)

but as always its at your own risk and dont pod me if u fuck your comp up :P
