New Jersey Devils vs Carolina Hurricanes - Devils in 5 (I don't think the hurricanes are really that good)

Detroit Red Wings vs Columbus Blue Jackets - Wings in 5
Vancouver Canucks vs St Louis Blues - Canuks in 7
Chicago Blackhawks vs Calgary Flames - Blackhawks in 6 (Flames give up way too many goals)

Here's my prediction, if the Flyers continue to lose games they will continue to be miserable cunts who try to injure opposing players. Their fans will justify their actions but in reality the whole team's mentality is that of a fucking untalented goon and they should be forced to take slap shots to the face.

God, I can understand a fight or chippy penalty out of frustration but I can't think of a more disgraceful sports team right now. Except possibly the Bengals.

19:41 PHI Arron Asham : Roughing - 2 min
19:46 PHI Ryan Parent : Cross checking - 2 min

19:53 PIT Bill Guerin : Fighting (maj) - 5 min
19:53 PHI Braydon Coburn : Fighting (maj) - 5 min

and I didn't edit out any Pen's penalties

Not to mention after the fight there was a butt end of the stick to the head by Carcillo (PHI) on a pens player after the face off but it wasn't called.

God, I can understand a fight or chippy penalty out of frustration but I can't think of a more disgraceful sports team right now. Except possibly the Bengals.

What pissed me off was one asshole player (Carcillo) and he knew exactly what he was doing, after being told by the ref not to do anything stupid. But a suspension is not called for in that case, just a misconduct. God, what a horrible trade Upshall for Carcillo, all we got was another Downie. The fans are not all justifying their actions, there are plenty on the flyers message board (where I am very active) and in the media who do not condone that.

Knock off the broadstreet bullies mentality, they haven't been that in a long ass time, they are talented (they had more 25+ goal scorers than any other team). If they weren't talented they wouldn't be in the playoffs. Listening to the horrible penguin announcers on youtube was painful. How do you guys listen to them every game?

Now, what I will say is the team is not playing with much heart... it has been a problem for a few months now. I think it had to do with them having no salary cap space and having to get rid of some key roleplayers (Metropolit, Upshall, etc). They don't have much speed now. I really hope things turn around next game.

16:08 PHI Joffrey Lupul : Cross checking - 2 min
19:41 PHI Andrew Alberts : Slashing - 2 min
19:41 PHI Arron Asham : Roughing - 2 min
19:46 PHI Ryan Parent : Cross checking - 2 min
19:46 PHI Scott Hartnell : Misconduct (10 min) - 0 min
19:53 PIT Bill Guerin : Fighting (maj) - 5 min
19:53 PHI Braydon Coburn : Fighting (maj) - 5 min

Not to mention after the fight there was a butt end of the stick to the head by Carcillo (PHI) on a pens player after the face off but it wasn't called.

I had shut off the game in the third period so I missed a bunch of the calls. But that is obviously frustration. They played like a bunch of lazy people in that game. :/ No excuse for that.

Guerin jumped Coburn (I don't blame him since pens had to respond to the flyers) and should have also gotten an instigation penality (which I am against, but since the NHL is a joke now, they should at least be consistent).

You want to know who to blame for the increase in dirty play, head shots, and boarding calls? The NHL! They think they can take the control out of the enforcers hands, and put them in the refs hands. It isn't going to work. There have been tons of articles talking about it.

I won't say much about the commentators other than Bob Errey is the man and not many people are big Steigy fans. Although honestly how many times do you watch clips of local sports announcers not from your hometown and think, man I wish he'd announce our games? I can't recall a single instance so I guess familiarity makes lots of things bearable.

I can't deny the Flyers aren't extremely talented and capable of much more than that game would lead viewers to believe. Still, I just don't like em. Not really partial either way about the suspension but the fine was definitely deserved. I'd almost say they should suspend Hartnell for a game but there's a chance his presence could help the Pens more than hurt them.

3/4 right in the east, 1/4 right in the west.. lets try again. Second round match ups!

EAST
Boston Bruins vs Carolina Hurricanes - Boston in 6 .. Cam Ward will steal a game or two
Pittsburgh Penguins vs Washington Capitals - Pittsburgh in 7. This'll be a great series.

WEST
Anaheim Ducks vs Detroit Red Wings - Anaheim in 7. They seem really determined and are playing great hockey. Hiller's been unreal against San Jose especially compared with Osgood who only had to deal with Columbus.
Vancouver Canucks vs Chicago Blackhawks - Vancouver in 7. Luongo is ON. Chicago has a lot of firepower but it won't matter.

The West is going to have a lot of overtime.. the hockey's only getting better. Should be a great second round.

Wow... interesting situations the past few games:

1. How is Kunitz not suspended for this (pens)?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_2Fb2V8EfU
Now, the reason I am saying suspension, is because that is what the NHL is doing now... so, they have to remain consistent.

2. Quick fucking whistle on a loose puck in the detriot ducks game:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJ5FHOLWM_k

Modest Genius
May 6th, 2009, 07:32 PM
that wings whistle was utterly ridiculous. the ref was probably quick to blow because there was so little time left on the clock, but was utterly wrong to do so. Even so, I'm not even convinced the whistle blew before the puck was in the net!

as for the cross-check, I'm not convinced that was deliberate, he was trying to jam the puck in, not knock the goalie over

Well, the rule on whistles is not when you hear the sound, but actually it is something like, as soon as the ref starts to bring his hand up to blow the whistle.. but, yea, this was ridiculous. Way to decide the game refs.

There is also some talk floating around of making the playoffs just like the regular season (1st OT 4 on 4 then shootout)... god I cannot put into words what a bad idea I think this is.

I have never liked the pens, but have really started to hate them due to the publicity they get.... it is BS. Last year the red wings beat them, and, as one of the red wings said... with all the publicity, you would think the pens had won. It is ridiculous.

My opinion on Sid is this (Pittsburgh bias noted). Does he dive more than the typical hockey player? Absolutely. Does he complain to refs in situations where other captain/stars would be less likely? Yes, slightly. Is he a pussy? No.

My opinion of Sid is that he's a smart superstar. Maybe he's soft by hockey standards but a superstar, ANY superstar should use the advantages provided to him by his league (Kobe, Lebron, Brady, A-Rod) and exploit them.

Regardless its laughable to say the refs are favoring the Pens because while certain calls are questionable there have been multiple games where referee conduct has been laughable against the guins.

I'm sure the NHL would love the Guins to win this cup but that doesn't change the fact that the media and commentators want and expect the wings to win. Its safe, simple, and easy to explain to fans. I'm sure not many of you guys want that but to be frank the Pens are the more exciting team but either way the rest of the series should be fun and while I hope the guins win it should be a good series regardless.

Polish Hill
June 6th, 2009, 06:19 AM
The ref suggestions were preemptive more than anything, I'm sure they've helped some team but who I can't suggest.

My opinion of Sid is this, surely not objective but as close as a Burgher can be. Here are the stipulations that create my attitude.

I) He is one of the best players in the NHL. Top 3 easily and as such his likelihood to be given/receive penalties is different from others.

II) He scores a lot of points and is extremely popular. As such other players and fans are extremely jealous and envious of his position. Its laughable how low he was on the players assessment of the best player. This is clear from his performance in the playoffs. The same is obvious in players. As a fan of an amazing NFL team who has great NFL player rivals I understand. I'm sure multiple posters here have the same problem.

III) He is still very young, even younger than myself, which sucks.

Sid is a great player who utilizes his role in the NHL for a strategical advantage at times. He's unlikely to be called for diving due to the NHL's need for publicity so it exacerbates the problem. Still, the NHL needs him more than he needs the NHL and as such some of the problems can be reasoned. Is he the most talented? Arguable. Is he a vagina? Surely many can argue this but the fact remains he's one of the few stars who is willing to throw down and that demands respect.

I don't like a lot of enemy stars but I do respect them and I hope a few others could do the same. Continue?...9.....8.....7.....6

1. I disagree, he is in the top 10, but not the top 3.
2. Other players are, imo, the best source to find out who the other best players are. There is more to a "best player" than just points.
3. Yes, he is very young, and I am sure he will grow out of this, and eventually, maybe I won't mind him so much, but the issue is what he is now, not what he will become.

The NHL doesn't need him, the Penguins needed him, they were almost bankrupt.

He isn't my most hated player though, that would be Avery.

seriously the only guys that i can think of to round out a top 3 list right now would be maybe datsyuk or iginla, and those guys would be really fucking borderline cases for third best player in the league

hes top 3 for sure, If we consider ovechkin the unanimous number 1, in my opinion 2nd place is tied between malkin and crosby.

if you look at crosby's stats hes been among the top overall points leaders when hes played anything to a full season and hes been awesome in playoffs.

As for NHL, not needing crosby, are you kidding me ? he generates massive revenue for NHL.

its ok if you dont like sid the kid, but atleast give credit where credit is due ;)

seriously, coming back from the lockout, crosby vs ovie was one of the things that saved the nhl (if you can even consider the nhl "saved" at this point)

ovechkin by himself, while still a wonderful thing, just would not have had the same impact without sid as a foil

Stop just looking at points. Yes they are important, but there is a lot more to a player than points. Also, what about defensemen? Do you not count them because they are not forwards? What about goalies? There is more than just forwards. So, no, Crosby is not a top 3 player.

Hockey already is, and always will be the red headed stepchild in the US. Crosby won't change that, and didn't change the look of hockey by himself. Pittsburgh, as I said was going bankrupt, they had nothing to be exited about.

Stop just looking at points. Yes they are important, but there is a lot more to a player than points. Also, what about defensemen? Do you not count them because they are not forwards? What about goalies? There is more than just forwards. So, no, Crosby is not a top 3 player.

you didn't answer the question

Just a quick top 10:

ovechkin
malkin
Lidstrom
Iginla
Niedermayer
Kiprusoff
Luongo
Lecavalier
Crosby
Datsyuk

interesting, i don't necessarily agree with all those choices (especially the ordering) but you could make a decent case for each of them

Like I said, it was a quick top 10, since you were badgering me for it to answer your question. I would probably swap some around as well. I had trouble even putting crosby IN the top 10... like I said, points don't mean everything.

Because clearly points are all Crosby has going for him

And while I agree that players are some of the most qualified to assess fellow players its laughable to suggest that there's no bias in such ratings. I'm sure he's perfectly happy losing a popularity contest and being in the Finals.

Well, what else does he have going for him? Nobody would deny that he is extremely talented, and that talent shows in his point totals.

yeah, what else does sidney crosby have going for him besides his massive amount of hockey skill, anyways

where the hell does he get off acting like he's all that

okay good, for a second i thought you were suggesting that kipper was the best goalie in the league

As one of, if not the youngest, captains in the league he's certainly got a fair amount of leadership skills. He's more than serviceable in the center circle and on defense. Also, he's got the stones to actually take a fight or two. Say what you will about him but at some put you have to put the bias away and realize how good he really is.

Clearly you didn't read that I said there is much more to being a hockey player than just skill.

Yea, and he was given that position because he was a good player, not because he was a good leader. He doesn't yet have good leadership skills, hardly any at all.

YOU put the bias away. I never said he wasn't good, and he is in my top 10 list. kthx
