View Full Version : [NFL] Your thoughts on Favre...
Rabbit

Everyone is bickering over whether Favre went to the Vikings to get "revenge" and what playing against the Packers mean to him.
My opinion? Of course that's a part, but not in a bad way. I think leaving any organization there's a drive to show that organization you're better than they said you were, and getting the chance to prove that is huge. But more importantly, Favre has a very good relationship with many of the staff in the Vikings coaching line up, and is a good fit for their offense, not to mention he's playing against teams he knows and has always played against. It makes sense.
I'm sick of hearing everyone dog the guy and saying he's just out for revenge, the guy is out to play football. But even if he were, who gives a fuck?
It's the same with any organization anywhere. Hell even in bands. A lead singer gets kicked out because he "sucks" or "isn't a good fit", of course he's going to want to draw bigger crowds with his new band and make a bigger splash with his new band, it's human nature. No one likes to be forced out of something and see it excel without them.

I live about 30 miles from Green Bay, and for all intents and purposes I consider that my home town because that's where I went to high school. Every FUCKING season I can't get any real fucking news locally because everyone's circle-jerking the packers. I could care less. All it means to me is bad traffic on game day.
Honestly though, I think the last 2 years really kinda tarnished Favre's career, shoulda retired as a Packer, now he'll be remembered as a waffler.

He's a solid QB still because he's in a system that's friendly to his play, has a fucking wall for an offensive line and has one of the best running backs in the NFL taking most of the load.
Favre sucked in New York because of the Jets system and line and running back stable. Minnesota is and was the perfect situation and no one can blame him, or should blame him for wanting to play football while he can in a near perfect situation.
Everyone hates on his jock, but lets face it, We're not likely to see someone ever play the game as he does and be so successful in doing so. This guy is going to be in the hall of fame and is probably going to be mentioned in the same sentence as Elway and Marino as the best of all time.
It's cool to see him play. I know a lot of people don't like he's not a packer, but no one really remembers Montana playing for Kansas.

Yes, O-lineman have to be strong, they're also extraordinarily fat. And if O-lineman can be strong and fat, I'll say that DH's and Pitchers can have coordination and be fat (although being fat is not a pre-requisite for being a DH or a pitcher, whereas it's almost certainly a pre-requisite for being on the O-line) :p
Football =/= being in good shape. Anybody who's a kicker, punter or on either line is probably not in great shape. To be fair, certain positions in Baseball =/= being in good shape either.
Soccer, Boxing/99%of MMA (lol "Big Country"), Tennis and Basketball (save for Shaq, and even then :/) are really the only sports where I can't think of that really don't allow for Fat participants (Although; 1-I'm probably missing several, 2-I don't know enough about Hockey to make a statement one way or another and 3-I really don't count Swimming, Track or Gymnastics as sports)

Olinemen most definitely have to be in shape, they also need to be big which means some of them have fat guts. There's no reason why baseball players should be fat, that's why I hate fat baseball players.

Does not compute.
Being fit, or rather, able to do strenuous physical activity does not mean "in shape". By definition, "in shape" refers to the current societal standard for what is, or is not, Attractive. Last I checked, fat guts are not attractive.

Although I won't say there aren't "out of shape" offensive linemen (not defending them but I'm sure its scary how much these guys can lift and how quick their feet are) I think its impossible to ignore the fact that there are quite a few freaks of nature on the line. If anything the Blind Side taught me that some of these physical specimens aren't so much out of shape as merely incomprehensible to normally sized beings like us.
But yea fighters and soccer players are probably more traditionally "athletic" I suppose. If athletic means can run for a long time, have no body fat, and are commonly fast as gazelle. But the Brazilian Ronaldo hasn't been an impressive specimen for a long while either. Although I'm sure examples of out of shape soccer stars are fewer and farther in between than some other sports.

Right. Except for that last part where I don't say it's the same thing when discussing sports.
You can be athletic as hell for all I care, but if you've got a gut like some of the pitchers and lineman I've seen, you're still fat. Your job may require it (in case of the lineman) and that's fine. But you're still fat.

The story goes that Rick Riley was always curious about Daly's nickname. Some point in their time together, Daly dropped his pants and shouted, "THIS IS WHY THEY CALL ME "LONG" JOHN DALY".

I would say most O-linemen are in very good shape for their size. It takes a ridiculous amount of stamina to sustain high rates of activity if you are 300+lbs. And David Wells is my hero. Who else could pitch a perfect game whilst intoxicated. Which is also, coincidentally, why baseball is awesome.
As far as Favre goes, if a team is willing to pay him the money, and he is willing to play, then I guess it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks. I think he won't last the entire season at his current level of play (he's just too fucking old), but that is a risk minnesota takes. Also I like that the NFC north is playing the AFC north this year, and Favre has done a number on the Browns and Ravens. Hopefully the steelers can man handle the vikings a little bit this week (#2 rushing defense and #12 passing defense, #3 overall) and put themselves in position to top their division.
