I just hooked up my compy to my tv, and I was wondering if a gamepad could be connected and do mouse movement/walking/stuff

-edit- I would test it but I'd need to buy one ;)

i personally dont think so because i dont think FA(if thats what your talking about) is set up to be configured by a controller.

Didn't somebody use a gamepad / mouse combo once with Fa?

it would be tricky because, unless they changed it, there is no bindable look up / look down beyond mouselook (at least, it isn't nearly very effective).

am I wrong? I'd have to boot up FA to check and that'd be way too much trouble ;)

Ye aiming without a mouse would be very tricky.

overlord_steveO is wrong, I have used one all along. A Gravis GamePad Pro/mouse/GameCommander voice control setup is what I use for first-person shooters (an actual joystick for flight sims) and for games that don't have joystick support, the keyboard emulation software included usually suffices.

PM for support with specific issues.

I did a quick test with HL2 the other day and while I could bind actions to certain buttons, my direction keys were ignored (oh well it's an old analog gamepad anyway)

So with some fidling around I could see it working in combination with a mouse.

Didn't you say that you held the gamepad sideways and use the buttons as left/right/up/down, Goatchomper? Or is my memory failing again?

I didn't much of this but I'm guessing you want to use a gamepad for FA.

BAD IDEA. For a number of reasons, PC gamepads aren't meant for FPS. They're more for like flight simulator, third person games.. at best if you got a controller with 2 analogs (what I got) You can move slightly, but you have to realize this isn't your ps2 controller. One of your analogs is always the throttle, and the other is always your look. It does NOT work well with FPS. You move very slow, also you have a huge drawback with aiming, You can aim a lot faster and smoother with a mouse than any gamepad.

So yes technically it can be done, but don't look forward to doing very good.

Yes, that's it exactly.....held sideways in my left hand with the cord between the middle fingers, thumbs on the colored buttons for movement, index finger for AUX 6 and 8, and ignore both the direction pad and AUX 5 and 7.

Doesn't matter if they're "meant" for FPS games or not.....I found years ago that it works quite well, and a lot more comfortably than WASD.
You can aim a lot faster and smoother with a mouse than any gamepad.
To elaborate.....I use the GamePad for movement, reload, and secondary weapon controls while using the mouse for aiming, crouching/proning (depends on the game), jumping, and toggling between knife and pistol.

I know a mouse is better, but trying something different could spark more interest D:

I have, on a couple of really bored occasions, plugged my PS2 controller into my PC (via my SuperJoy 15, or some lame name. google or see lik-sang.com or the stepmania website for info), and although it's weird, it -does- work, if needed.
