I find this ignorant, but I want to hear the other side. Discuss.

Southeastern Oklahoma State University (Savages)
I'd say out of all of them, that's the only really offensive one.

Better rename the Celtics now.

Yea, if its Savages or like the Scalpers I can see that, but Braves being racist or Warriors. Last time I checked being brave was a fucking good thing. I hate it how no one seems to care about Notre Dame, just because its about the irish its ok, but if its about a non-white group its racist.

I don't understand why they're okay with being called "Indians" even though that's what they were mistakingly labled hundreds of years ago under the assumption that they were in India.

I saw a pretty funny political cartoon. It had the NCAA board discussing the whole issue then the intercom says that theres a Jeep Cherokee in the parking lot with its lights on, and one of the guys is all nervous looking. Sort of interesting how all these school and school associations care, but car markers still use tribal names on cars, and the U.S. Army has an informal rule(or atleast do it 90% of the time) of naming helicopters after indian tribes.

Wow, I know this isn't exactly on topic, but in the news it said PETA put a commercial on the air comparing animal cruelty to the slavery of African-Americans. Time for a battle among interest groups.

It's not that offensive, shit look at Savage Firearms, the logo is an indian head. I am almost one half Mohawk, and I find none of this offensive.

Oh, I agree, it's retarded. I should've said relatively.

Update: the Seminole tribe of Oklahoma as well as the Seminole tribe of Florida has mentioned that they're outraged at the decision to force Florida State University (the Seminoles) to change their name.
FSU has LONG had ties to the Seminole nation, and supported the community.

Political correctness run amok yet again.

PETA is a bunch of brainless morons. What's new.

You should read some of Ayn Rand.

There's a saying about suburbs being "where they cut down all the trees and name the streets after them." I think a similar one for this would be the "the U.S., were they kill off all the natives and then name the military hardware/sports teams after them."

What relevance does your heredity have to do with any of this?

I'm just voicing an opinion here, I didn't pull an "It isn't offensive because I say so I LOVE ATLAS SHRUGGED" kind of thing.

Ayn Rand is awesome, without her, my favorite band would be nothing.
And I brought up my heredity because I am part Mohawk, I am not offended when I see those crazy hairdos called Mohawks, I am not offended when I see a team called Redskins, or Savages. I bet the people deciding on this aren't even part Native American.

Reading Ayn Rand can lead to depression and loss of hope about the current world situation.

WEll, maybe not nothing but they'd have one less album :p

I think many sports teams take Native American names as a way of tapping into the reputation that comes along with them. They seem to focus on the badassness of Indian hunters and warriors.
Think about it, how many teams do you see named the sissy surrenderers, or the sterotypicaly gay team?
Its a sign of respect I think. well, most of the time

Except that you, I, and the Erie wiped out at Iroquois hands all know that's not the case.

No I just brought it up because I was browsing through "For the New Intellectual" and I thought it odd that she rants about how people who are not "intellectuals" by her standards are savages.

Except you not being offended doesn't really prove anything. I'm part Cherokee, so if I'm offended does that mean I cancel you out? Or do we work out the fractions? You don't have to be native american to consider it inappropriate, just as you don't have to be a victim of a crime of discrimination to be outraged by it.
Except that you, I, and the Erie wiped out at Iroquois hands all know that's not the case.
I didn't help build the suburbs either.
